Can a bucket list help you live a more satisfying life?

In case you don’t know what a bucket list is, it’s a list of all the things you want to do with your life before its too late. A list of all the experiences you think will help you feel fulfilled and happy. This may sound like a morbid exercise to do, but it’s really not. It’s actually something you should do to live a brighter, happier life. Just hear me out.

In The Bucket List movie, Morgan Freeman plays a 70-year-old mechanic who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. On his deathbed, he puts his bucket list together and it sinks in. He’s never lived the life he really wanted.

He’s lucky enough to befriend Jack Nicholson, a billionaire who decides to do the bucket list with him and pay for everything.

The bucket list process

Most of us aren’t lucky enough to have a rich friend like the Jack Nicholson character from the movie, but we should all have a bucket list anyway.

Putting together a bucket list is a process. It’s a way of turning big, lofty, vague and seemingly impossible ideas into something more manageable. It’s a way of helping yourself live a more fulfilling life.

When creating your bucket list, you should put everything and anything down on the list. If it feels stupid, put it down. If it feels crazy, even better, put it down. If it feels impossible, definitely put it down.

A bucket list will:

Clue you in on what you really want

Sometimes, life is full of distractions.

It’s full of noise and it’s hard to get clarity on what you really want to do. Sometimes the things you think you want to do are really the things that other people want to do. Or things other people want you to do.

Creating a bucket list will get all the ideas out of your head and onto paper. Just getting ideas out of your head will give you clarity and a better sense of who you are.

Satisfy curiosity and discover talents

Remember how I said you shouldn’t limit any of your bucket list ideas?

Sometimes the reason why certain things capture our imaginations is because we’re curious about them. We want to know more. By simply doing some of the list items, you will get a feel for whether you like them or not.

You can eliminate list items that you discover aren’t a fit for you and put more time into the list items you enjoy. Usually, when you enjoy doing something, you will spend more time doing it…and invested time becomes talent.

Help you attract like-minded people

By sharing your bucket list, you’ll discover that others have the same aspirations as you. Common interests, goals and dreams can lead to a greater sense of community and deeper friendships.

Within this community, you don’t have to hide yourself. You can relax, loosen up and be more and more of who you really are. Feeling that deeper connection with others is a great way to feel fulfilled, satisfied and overall happy

Give you solid direction

Work isn’t everything. It’s just a means to an end. But more often than not, the direction of our lives is dictated by our jobs and financial obligations. We allow our work to take over our lives and bury who we really are.

Having a bucket list is a way of cutting through these obligations. It’s a way of prioritising your ideas so you can have a solid direction towards what is more fulfilling for you.

It gives you something to look forward to on a regular basis and most importantly, will help you live the life you’ve always dreamt of.

Founder of BoomerBooster.comHotel & Resort Marketing Consultant

For over 25 years, I  worked for global corporations including Starwood Hotels & Resorts an Marriott International but I was always dreaming of starting my own business

IN 2017 I founded my online business school, Boomer Business School, teaches baby boomers how to build a business they love, reinvent retirement, travel more, be creative and most importantly, be free.

Helping others build a thriving online business really makes me happy. I have finally found the kind of work were I can make a meaningful contribution, unlike my last couple of jobs that were more about profit and politics than people and passion.

To me, genuine success is to pass my knowledge, skills and experience on to baby boomers who are hungry to remain vital and engaged with the world. Baby boomers who are keen to achieve the freedom they deserve and keep making money well into retirement years.
